From around 1900 to 1924, one of my ancestors, Mary Baxter (nee Robinson) lived at Abbeylea on Morris Lane with her husband William Baxter a 'woollen cloth manufacturer'.
Their son Albert (a secretary at a 'tanners and curriers'?), lived next door at Havilande Villa, and their daughter Emily lived with her husband Charles Jole at Olive Mount, Bramley Hill and later at Cooper House. I think Charles was possibly the Managing Director of Kirkstall Breweries.
Does anyone have any information about the family, and can anyone tell me if Cooper House is still in existence? I know that the Kirkstall Breweries site is now student accommodation, but would it be possible to see the house if it's still there?
Thanks

Hello Helen,
I live at 'Tower View', which as you may know is in the other pair of houses across the drive from the ones you mention. If you look at http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-465624-kirkstall-brewery-student-village-leeds you will see in the reference to Kirkstall Brewery the following:

"HISTORICAL NOTE: in 1793 Henry Cooper and Joseph Musgrave
leased 2 plots from Sir James Graham. Henry Cooper built
maltings, wharf, Cooper House (qv) for himself and Poplar
House for his maltster; Joseph Musgrave also built maltings,
cottages and Grove House. From 1814-32 the maltings were
operated by Ephraim Elsworth; in 1833 Thomas Walker bought
them and made a brewery, he died a bankrupt in 1844 and Simeon
Musgrave sold out to Benjamin Dawson and Co."

The house is still there, since it is in the current 'listed buildings' register.
It is managed by The accommodation Office at Leeds Met university. To get acccess to the site to view the exterior, you'd have to ring them on
0113 812 5972
Good Luck.

Thanks for the link Ken - I was interested to read about the brewery being sold to a Blackpool company in the thirties. I wonder if Charles Jole was still there then?

I've seen Tower View when I've been over to Kirkstall (coincidentally, my son currently lives at Norman View) I'm sure you've seen the photo on the Leodis site at:
http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIdentifier=2002426_56817263

Thanks again - I'll certainly contact Leeds Met accommodation office to see if I can arrange a viewing of Cooper House.

Helen,
Have you seen the census returns for the houses in Morris Lane for 1901 and 1911. I have them. If you'd like me to email them to you contact me at kirkstallmatters@ntlworld.com .
