Originally known as the The Lane, the 12th Century arches gave access to the Lay Brothers Lane, which was separated from the Cloister by a high stone wall. The Malt House and Bake House came into existence in the 15th Century, following the decline in Lay brothers.

The archway was converted into a malthouse and bakehouse by adding the ovens and vat (which can still be seen today).
