The cloister was originally ringed with a stone walkway, each section providing the monks with different duties.

The East walk (right) fronted the Library, Chapter house and Parlour. The North walk (closest to the church) held the scriptorium where the monks wrote and studied.

The buttresses were added during the Victorian restorations to prevent the wall from collapsing. The window in the centre of the picture was originally a door to the lay brothers dormitory
